RETNA (born Marquis Lewis 1979) is a contemporary artist, primarily recognized for his tremendously breathtaking outdoor murals and graffitiesque art installations. Taking his moniker from the lyrics of a Wu Tang song that resonated with him in his youth, RETNA was born and raised in Los Angeles, and started his career in the early 1990s. The artist has an unmistakable aesthetic that integrates photography, graffiti, traditional painting and a unique glyphic style he developed using a combination of rich global influences: Incan, Egyptian, Asian, Hebrew and Arabic and Native American.
Having emerged as one of the most prolific street artists in the contemporary art world, Lewis also has popularly exhibited at 30 international exhibitions and galleries in Los Angeles, Miami, London, New York and Hong Kong. He’s also done advertising work for brands such as VistaJet, Louis Vuitton, and Nike.
The transcendent nature of RETNA’s body of work merges couture with street culture, the divine spiritual with the sensual and it has generated for him just as varied an array of fans, from the urban hip-hop crowd to the executive moguls and all else in between.
