Artist Wangechi Mutu, born in Nairobi, Kenya, lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Best known for her large-scale collages depicting lush female figures, Mutu uses human, animal, plants and machine parts pieced together from found materials and magazine cutouts, along with sculpture and painted imagery, to create spectacular and provocative images. Her collages depict female cyborg-like figures in fantastical landscapes that are simultaneously unnerving and alluring. Her work — in a science fictional setting — explores issues of African traditions, gender, race, pornography, global colonization, and the eroticization of the black female body. Her travelling exhibit ‘Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey’ now at The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina is being touted as the most comprehensive, innovative show yet for this internationally renowned, multidisciplinary artist. The incredible onslaught to the senses of Wangechi Mutu’s work can only be experienced from viewing her work live, so please check it out!
