“When you are beaten and penalized for being independent, or truly self-reliant, then you develop a dysfunctional relationship with self-reliance, and a fear of true independence. ” ~ Lauryn Hill
Ex-Fugees member, singer Lauryn Hill, 37, has been sentenced to three monthS jail time followed by three months home confinement for failing to pay $500,000 to the IRS. She is scheduled to be interned today, July 8th at an, as of yet, undisclosed facility.
Her lawyers said she had paid more than $970,000 of an outstanding tax bill which amounted to more than $2m.
Hill claimed the sum was outstanding because she had “withdrawn from society” after alleged threats against her family.
Shortly before she was arrested last year, Hill penned a statement (excerpt below) admonishing what she says is the corruption in the music industry:
“When artists experience danger and crisis under the effects of this kind of insidious manipulation, everyone easily accepts that there was something either dysfunctional or defective with the artist, rather than look at, and fully examine, the system and its means and policies of exploiting/’doing business’. Not only is this unrealistic, it is very dark in its motivation, conveniently targeting the object of their hero worship by removing any evidence that they ‘needed’ or celebrated this very same resource just years, months or moments before. Since those who believe they need a hero/celebrity outnumber the actual heroes/celebrities, people feel safe and comfortably justified in numbers, committing egregious crimes in the name of the greater social ego. Ironically diminishing their own true hero-celebrity nature in the process.”
Seemingly back into the lion’s den, Lauryn says she has signed a recording contract with Sony to pay her overdue taxes and also because she needs to express her creativity. Hill hasn’t released much music since her 1998 solo debut, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, which sold more than 10 million albums and won five Grammy Awards.
During her trial, Hill was ordered by the presiding judge in Newark, New Jersey to undergo counselling because of her conspiracy theories – including that artists are being oppressed by a plot involving the corporate sector and the media industry.
Hmmm…These days people don’t pay their taxes for many reasons; ignorance of the process, laziness, negligence, willful civil disobedience…I won’t pretend to know if the reason why Lauryn Hill says she didn’t file is true or not, but consider this article and see if you can piece together this puzzle: Private Prisons, Hip Hop, Conspiracies and Truths.
I’m worried for Lauryn. God Bless her and keep her safe!
